SAEP Grant Recipient: Magrath Elementary Vertical Growing Wall 2022-2023
Project: Vertical Hydroponic Growing Wall
Mr. Aric Wutzke - Magrath Elementary School
Goal: To produce enough lettuce in his hydroponic growing system to feed his entire classroom as well as supply other school programs with the produce needed.
Description: Have had great success with multiple harvests since putting the wall up in the classroom. Some of their harvests have been sold to the Magrath Highschool to help with their lunch program. The students are responsible for planting, tending, and harvesting the lettuce. Plants are a big part of the Grade 4 curriculum so it ties in directly with what they are teaching in class. They had some smaller yields than expected on some of their harvests so his students are researching the causes and learning all about potential deficiencies! They continue to experiment and tweak with each harvest gaining valuable knowledge each step of the way! Students have benefited greatly from this project and are very engaged with it!
