Administrative Procedure 561: SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENT TRANSPORTATION
Background
The Division shall provide transportation for those students with special needs who cannot access the regular school bus system. This service will be offered under the following procedures.
Definition
Special needs students, for the purpose of special transportation, refers to students that are coded as severe or mild-moderate, or who require special transportation because of physical, emotional, education, or social challenges.
Procedures
- The Division will provide transportation to and from school on each program day.
- Transportation will be provided for programming to other facilities during the program day.
- This service will be provided in a yellow school bus meeting all D-250 standards, to include any and all restraints, lifts, booster seats, etc. that are required by law.
- The safety, comfort, and well-being of these passengers will be paramount at all times.

- The bus will be operated by a fully licensed and qualified operator (minimum Class 2), according to Administrative Procedure 446.
- Where there is more than one (1) student on the bus, a Supervisor will be on board to assist with student loading, unloading and student discipline during ride time.
- The decision to provide special transportation will be done upon the recommendation of the principals in collaboration with the Assistant Superintendent, Inclusive Learning Services, Transportation Supervisor and the parent.

- The Division reserves the right to charge a fee for any exceptional conditions that may exist beyond the qualifications outlined by Alberta Education.
- The Division shall be authorized to make a payment in lieu of transportation where warranted.
- The Transportation Supervisor will be responsible to work with the Assistant Superintendent, Inclusive Learning Services in establishing workable routing to meet the needs of the students.
