Administrative Procedure 252: REQUEST TO REVIEW CONTROVERSIAL RESOURCE MATERIALS
Background
The Division shall provide a process whereby concerned individuals or groups may register a complaint regarding any items included in the school library collection or used as a learning resource.
Procedures
- The concerned party must file the request to review with the Principal on a "Form for Request to Review Controversial Resource Materials" (Form 252) available at the school and on the Division website.
- Materials in question shall be evaluated with respect to:
- Administrative Procedure 251 – Library Materials Selection.
- Alberta Education Policy re: Controversial Issues in the Classroom (Guide to Education: ECS to Grade 12).
- Existing community culture and values.
Care is to be taken to ensure that the materials in question are evaluated "in context''.
- Materials in question shall be evaluated with respect to:
- The decision of the Principal will be made after consultation with the librarian and/or a teacher, and a member of the school council.
- The Principal's decision may be appealed to the Superintendent.
