Administrative Procedure 213: Appendix: Designated Special Education Private Schools
Background
The Division recognizes the right of parents to enrol their child in a Designated Special Education Private School. However, the Division will only provide funding for students to attend these schools according to the following procedures.
Procedures
- Parents wishing to enrol their child in a Designated Special Education Private School shall consult with the Superintendent regarding their child’s mild and moderate special needs eligibility and placement options available to them within the Division, prior to registering their child with a Designated Special Education Private School. The Division shall keep a record of this discussion.
- If, after consultation, the Superintendent directs a student to attend a Designated Special Education Private School, the Division will pay all program costs that are not covered by funding provided by Alberta Education to the Designated Special Education Private School.
- If, after consultation, the Superintendent does not direct a student to attend, but a parent still wishes to enrol their child in a Designated Special Education Private School, Form 213-1 must be completed and signed by both the parent and the Superintendent.
- If the consultation took place before September 30 and the student is registered with a Designated Special Education Private School before September 30, the student will not be claimed as a Division student. All funding for the student will go directly from Alberta Education to the Designated Special Education Private School.
- If the consultation took place after September 30, and the student was registered with the Division as of September 30, the Division will transfer pro-rated funding to the Designated Special Education Private School in accordance with the regulations in the Funding Manual for School Authorities, based on a ten (10) month program.
- If a parent does not consult with the Superintendent and registers their child with a Designated Special Education Private School after September 30, the Division will transfer a lesser amount of pro-rated funding to the Designated Special Education Private School in accordance with the regulations in the Funding Manual for School Authorities, based on a ten (10) month program.
