Learning Through Truth and Reconciliation
The Westwind School Division hosted a Professional Development Day for staff at Magrath High School on Friday, December 6. Cadmus Delorme, a distinguished Cree and Saulteaux leader from southern Saskatchewan, addressed the theme, "There's No Reconciliation Without Truth," offering profound insights into Canada's journey toward reconciliation.
In his address, Delorme emphasized confronting historical truths to achieve genuine reconciliation. He also highlighted the importance of understanding the legacy of residential schools and their ongoing impact on Indigenous communities. Delorme's message underscored that acknowledging and learning from past injustices is essential for building a more inclusive and equitable future.
Delorme's heartfelt reflections and powerful call to action profoundly inspired attendees. Educators expressed a renewed commitment to integrating Indigenous perspectives into curricula and fostering environments where all students feel valued and understood.
The Westwind School Division remains dedicated to advancing reconciliation efforts and acknowledges the vital role of education in this process. By engaging with leaders like Cadmus Delorme, the division aims to equip its staff and students with the knowledge and empathy necessary to contribute meaningfully to reconciliation in Canada.
Delorme's academic credentials include a Bachelor of Business Administration, a Certificate in Hospitality, Tourism, and Gaming Entertainment Management from the First Nations University of Canada, and a Master of Public Administration from the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy. His tenure as chief of Cowessess First Nation marked significant advancements in economic self-sustainability, renewable energy, and agriculture.
